The total number of depots in Sinda District has been reduced from seventeen to eight.
Sinda District Agriculture Coordinator DACO, Henry Mukulumoya says this is an indication that FRA, the Food Reserve Agency might not buy a lot of the crop to encourage private sector participation.
He mentioned Kasambandola, M’ngomba, Seya, Chitawe, Nyanje, Mchembwe, Makina and Chikalawa as proposed buying points in the district.
He was speaking during a one day stakeholder’s consultative meeting in Sinda.
Meanwhile, Chieftainess Nyanje has called on government to expedite the distribution of farming inputs in the 2017/2018 farming season.
She says that in the 2016-2017 farming season, government delayed in distributing farming inputs to farmers in the district.
The traditional leader explained that the delay has greatly affected small scale farmers, who only rely on FISP, the Farmer Input Support Program.
And the DACO says the late delivery of inputs to farmers was because his office received seed late.
An 86 year old woman has died on the spot after being hit by a tipper truck while seated under a tree at home in Moth residential area.
Eastern Province Police Commissioner, Alex Chilufya has confirmed the incident which happened yesterday at about 15:50 hours at Plot Number 1782.
Mr. Chilfuya says that Tiwine Phiri was sited under the tree when the truck which was parked whilst loading soil rolled down from the top of the hill.
The truck registration number ALR 7429, hit into the wall fence and gate through the yard and hit the woman.
Mr. Chilufya has identified the driver of the truck as 27 year old Lukas Jere of New Houses in Kapata Compound
The Community Markets for Conservation COMACO is sponsoring 167,000 farmers in Zambia.
COMACO President Dale Lewis says that the farmers are in Eastern, Central and Muchinga Provinces.
Mr. Lewis was speaking when Minister of Finance Felix Mutati toured COMACO plants and offices in Chipata this morning.
He says that COMACO is encouraging farmers to practice conservation farming and other farming activities.
Mr. Lewis says that the plan for COMACO is to see farmers become self-reliant in future as they start taking care of themselves.
The UPND in Eastern Province has added its voice in denying reports that ADD leader Charles Milupi is now UPND President.
Provincial Spokesperson, Ronald Mbuzi says that Hakainde Hichilema remains president of UPND.
Mr. Mbuzi told Breeze News that people should ignore media reports suggesting that Mr. Mulupi is now the UPND leader.
He says that Mr. Milupi just like Dr. Nevers Mumba is just a working partner of the opposition political party.
Mr. Mbuzi explained that even the recently held UPND national management meeting was chaired by National Chairperson, Mutale Nalumango and not Mr. Milupi.
Two people have died after being involved in a road traffic accident which occurred along the Great East Road in Sinda district.
Police Spokesperson, Esther Katongo confirmed to Breeze News that the accident happened around 04 hours on Thursday at a Bridge near Sungwa village in Chief Kawaza’s area.
Ms. Katongo said Mafafuke Nzima 28, Samson Tambatamba 40, both of Chadiza were pronounced dead upon arrival at Petauke district hospital.
She said the other two passengers, Andrew Jere 28 and Kelvin Daka 19 escaped unhurt.
Ms. Katongo says the accident happened when the driver of a Volvo Truck, which had four passengers on board failed to stop the motor vehicle and hit into a stationed construction excavator.
Ms. Katongo said the driver identified as Happy Musonda aged 27 of Chadiza district is on the run.
She says the two bodies are in Petauke district hospital awaiting postmortem and burial while police have launched a manhunt for the driver.
Meanwhile an 81 year old woman is reported to have died after being run over by a tipper truck in Chipata’s Moth area.
