Local authority gets tough on illegal land developers

Chipata Municipal Council has given a stop order to people constructing shops along Sangulukani road near Kapata Cemetery.

A check by Breeze News yesterday at the site found people have dug foundations in readiness for construction of the shops while council police were chasing people who were found working at the plots.

And Council Public Relations Officer Taonga Kaonga told Breeze News that the local authority did not give out the land to anyone because it is on a gazetted road earmarked for upgrading to bituminous standard.

She says all the over ten plots should not be developed adding that the area has a water pipe underground.

Meanwhile Chipata Mayor Sinoya Mwale yesterday locked out council workers who reported for work after 08 hours.

Mr. Mwale told Breeze News that the decision to lock the main gate to the council offices was meant to bring change in the operations of the council because most people report for work late.

He added that people who are not ready to work should resign.
