Number of FISP beneficiaries increased in Eastern Province

The government has, for the 2016/2017 farming season, increased the number of FISP, Farmer Input Support Programme beneficiaries in Eastern Province.
Acting Provincial Agricultural Coordinator Moffat Khosa disclosed the development during a field day held at Katopola Farm Training Institute in Chipata.
Mr. Khosa says the increase is from 183,209 farmers captured in the 2015/2016 farming season to 192,044 farmers in the 2016/2017 farming season.
He also disclosed that farmers in Chipata, Katete and Petauke districts would, in the next farming season receive farming inputs through the electronic voucher system being implemented by government through the Ministry of Agriculture.
He says 47,736 farmers will benefit from the e-voucher system in Chipata district, while 26,869 and 28, 633 farmers will benefit in Katete and Petauke districts respectively.
Mr. Khosa says the rest of the districts in the province will access inputs using the conventional FISP system as, has always been the case.
Instead of using middlemen to distribute agricultural inputs, the e-voucher system permits farmers to source their inputs directly from seed producers and suppliers in the country.
Earlier, Mr. Khosa implored farmers to use the knowledge acquired from the field day to enhance production and productivity.
The field day was held under the theme: “Managing the Environment for Growth.”
