Government has been urged to find ways of ensuring that rural women find it easier to access soft loans and funds under various women empowerment programs.
Mbenjere Market Vice chairperson in Chief Chikuwe’s area, Sarah Tembo, observes that currently, most women empowerment programs target marketeers or those running small businesses, which have constant income flows throughout the year.
She said this as Zambia joins the rest of the world in commemorating the International Day of Rural Women today.
Ms. Tembo noted that this disadvantages women in rural areas, as they mainly depend on agriculture, where money is only made once a year after selling their crops.
She explained that government must therefore ensure that conditions for women in rural areas differ to avoid disadvantaging them.
