The number of diabetes cases is increasing at a very fast rate in Zambia.
This came to light during the commemoration of World Diabetes Day held in Chipata on Friday.
Eastern Province Medical Officer, Dr. Kennedy Malama says that the entire districts in Eastern Province have been reporting an increase in diabetes cases and attendances at health facilities.
And Dr. Malama says that there are 285 million cases of diabetes worldwide today and that most diabetic patients do not know that they are suffering from the disease.
Dr. Malama mentioned some symptoms of diabetes as frequent thirsty, losing energy, losing weight, too much appetite and frequent urinating.
The Provincial Medical Officer advised people to watch what they eat by not consuming food with excess fats in order to prevent diabetes.
He says that government is doing everything in ensuring that diabetes is prevented in Zambia.
The World Diabetes Day is being commemorated under the theme “Diabetes Education and Prevention”.
