Police in Chipata have picked up two people in connection with a suspected defilement case involving an eight year old grade one pupil of Hope Campus School in Magazine Compound.
Eastern Province Police Commissioner, Eugene Sibote says that police have detained the father to the girl and a 26 year old man identified as Mark Mwanza.
Mr. Sibote told the media yesterday that police on Tuesday last week received a report of a child who went missing after knocking off from school.
Mr. Sibote explained that the girl ended up at the One Stop Centre at Chipata General Hospital after she was sent back from school for reporting at a wrong time.
He says that the girl who decided to watch television at a shop near the school later refused to go home, forcing the sales person to take her to the One Stop Centre where she revealed that she was being defiled.
Mr. Sibote says that medical examinations at the hospital revealed that the girl was repeatedly defiled.
And Mr. Sibote says that Mark Mwanza has been detained to assist with investigations.
He says that the girl to the father is believed to have hired Mr. Mwanza who posed as a witchdoctor to perform some rituals at the child’s school and blame some teachers for the girl’s disappearance, a situation which almost caused confusion at the school.
He says the girl’s father is in police custody and has been charged with defilement while police are still looking for a charge for the alleged fake witchdoctor
Mr. Sibote has appealed to members of the public to stop taking the law in their hands before establishing the real facts to avoid rioting and destroying properties.
Residents in the area almost rioted over the matter but quick action from police prevented the situation from escalating.
