A man of Sinda district sentenced to ten years imprisonment with hard labour for manslaughter.

The Chipata High Court has sentenced a man of Sinda district to ten years imprisonment with hard labour for manslaughter.
Facts of the offence are that on April 15th 2015 in Sinda district, Saini Lungu unlawfully caused the death of his mother, Tisilile Mwanza when he hit her with a stick on the head, neck and stomach, which eventually resulted in her falling down and being pronounced dead when she was rushed to Nyanje hospital.
The confusion ensued when Tisilile Mwanza in a bid to quell a fight between Saini Lungu and his brother, Daniel Lungu picked up a stick and beat Saini on the back, forcing the son to retaliate.
And in passing sentence, High Court Judge William Mweemba said that he had heard the mitigation by the state council that Lungu was first offender but sentenced him to ten years imprisonment.
Meanwhile Judge Mweemba sentenced Emmanuel Phiri of Nyimba district to ten years imprisonment with hard labour for arson.
Particulars of the offence are that Phiri on April 17th in Nyimba district set ablaze property worth 970 thousand Kwacha belonging to Damalesi Daka using safety matches.
In passing sentence, Judge Mweemba said that the offence was a serious one, which attracts a minimum jail term of ten years and maximum of life imprisonment.
Judge Mweemba said that he was sentencing Phiri to ten years imprisonment considering that no life was lost in the inferno.
