A police officer in Chipata district has been implicated in a maize smuggling scandal.

This follows at incident where officers from ZNS, the Zambia National Service impounded a truck laden with 216 by 25 kilogramme bags of mealie meal in Feni area on Monday.

Eastern Province Permanent Secretary, Chanda Kasolo has confirmed, stating that the owner of the truck reported that he had bribed the police officer.

Mr Chanda says that the police officer also provided the owner of the mealie meal which was supposed to be smuggled into Malawi with information of where ZNS officers were stationed.

He says that unfortunately, ZNS officers are mobile and the information provided by the police officer turned out to be wrong.

Mr Kasolo reiterated his warning that government will not tolerate people involved in smuggling the staple food.

He says that government has maintained its decision to confiscate maize and maize products for those involved in smuggling including their vehicles.
