A survey has revealed high abuse of the Social Cash Transfer Scheme in Katete district.

Government has unearthed high abuse of the Social Cash Transfer Scheme in Katete district.

Katete District Social Welfare Officer Joyce Msoni says that her office has discovered a number of cheating cases after it undertook a door to door survey on beneficiaries of the social cash transfer.

Ms. Msoni explained that during the survey it was found that some headmen and people who are fit for work were benefiting from the program a situation that is contrary to the schemes criteria and purpose.

She says Katete is currently using an inclusive model which allows disabled, vulnerable and unfit for work people, to benefit from the program.

Ms. Msoni added that after the survey, about 276 people were removed from the scheme out of the total beneficiaries of 476 the district office was working with.

She says the district office also had to update its records by removing those that had died or relocated.

She stated that the social cash transfer is aimed at helping people in abject poverty and giving them a decent livelihood.

Meanwhile Ms. Msoni says her office will pay off the March -April, May-June transfers once it receives the funds.
