A truck loaded with 1,000 bags of mealie-meal has been impounded in Vubwi district.
Eastern Province Permanent Secretary, Chanda Kasolo told Breeze News that officers from ZNS, the Zambia National Service impounded the truck in Vubwi yesterday.
Mr. Kasolo says smugglers of the commodity are now finding it easy to use Vubwi routes which border Malawi and Mozambique to smuggle mealie-meal to either of the two countries.
He reiterated that government will not tolerate anyone found smuggling mealie-meal or maize because it is illegal.
And Mr. Kasolo says investigations into the 14 trucks that were impounded in Nyimba district last week have not yet been concluded.
He says the owners of the trucks will face prosecution and their trucks will be auctioned while the mealie-meal will be forfeited to the state.
The Permanent Secretary says that this is in an effort to make mealie-meal available to Zambians.
