A vice chairperson for Chitungulu community resource board in Lundazi sentenced to two years imprisonment over government trophy.

A 33 year old man of Mukwete Village in Chief Chitungulu’s area in Lundazi District has been sentenced to five years imprisonment with hard labour for being in possession of prescribed trophy namely, ivory.
Appearing before Magistrate Milton Nyirenda, was Rabson Lungu, a vice chairperson for Chitungulu Community Resource Board CRB in Lundazi District.
Particulars of the offence are that Rabson Lungu on dates unknown, but between 1st August and 14th September 2013 jointly and whilst acting together with persons unknown, unlawfully had in their possession two pieces of ivory weighing 9 Kilogrammes without certificate of ownership, contrary to the laws of Zambia.
In mitigation, Lungu told the court that he was the first offender, with two wives and ten children, and that if sent to prison, his children will suffer.
But Magistrate Lungu took into consideration that he was the first offender but that cases of that nature are prevalent in the area.
He said that he was to give a deterrent sentence to would be offenders, adding that cases involving ivory has a mandatory sentence of five years or more.
