August 11 general elections to gobble 940 million Kwacha

The Electoral Commission of Zambia ECZ says it has budgeted 940 million Kwacha for the August 11 elections.

ECZ Acting Director, Brown Kasoro says the amount also includes money in case of an event where a rerun happens after the first round of voting.

He explained that the commission has already submitted the funding schedule to the Ministry of Finance.

Breeze FM Staffer, Gift Phiri reports that Mr Kasoro said this during a luncheon to give an update on the preparedness of the coming general elections in Lusaka.
And ECZ Commissioner Christopher Mushabati says that ECZ has set May 15th to 21st for the verification and inspection of the Voter’s Register.
Mr. Mushabati says the public will be accorded chance to check and correct their details for any errors.
And Mr. Mushabati challenged the media to be fair and accurate in the manner they report election matters.

He also challenged journalists to cover candidates for all political parties, because the manner in which candidates are covered can influence voters.
Meanwhile ECZ Corporation Secretary, Erick Kamwi clarified that the commission will only require academic qualifications or the equivalent and NOT professional qualifications from aspiring candidates.
Mr. Kamwi said the commission in consultation with the Examination Council of Zambia has indicated to all political parties on the interpretation of the Grade 12 qualification.
