Bus fares for long and local routes increased.

People travelling from Chipata to Lusaka will from Tuesday next week start paying 185 Kwacha from the previous 160 kwacha following a fifteen per cent increment on long route bus fares.

Eastern Province Public Private Drivers Association Chairperson, Joseph Phiri confirmed the new bus fares to Breeze News.

Mr. Phiri says minibus drivers operating on local routes will have to increase their fares by between 50 ngwee and 1 Kwacha 50 ngwee only.

He says taxi drivers will maintain a 15 Kwacha charge for short routes and 20 Kwacha for long routes.

Mr. Phiri says the increment on transport fares follows the meeting held by the Drivers Association of Zambia, RTSA, the Road Transport and Safety Agency and other stakeholders last week.

He warned drivers not to exaggerate the fares but follow what was agreed upon, adding that drivers that will hike fares more than what was agreed will be breaking the law.
