Chipata Municipal Council has welcomed the proposal by Eastern Province Permanent Secretary, Chanda Kasolo for Umodzi Highway to have dual carriageway.
Council spokesperson, Taonga Kaonga says that a dual carriageway would work better because of the increase in traffic in the district.
Last week Mr. Kasolo revealed that he had made a proposal to the funders of the project for a dual carriageway on Umodzi highway.
Under the current project, the contractor, Motal Engil is supposed to widen the highway from 4 to 6 meters on either side of the lane.
Last year former Director of Engineering, Andrew Zulu indicated that the council had decided against having a dual carriageway.
Mr. Zulu had explained that this was after a consultant report which indicated that Umodzi Highway does not need a dual carriageway because Chipata does not have enough traffic.
However, recent increase in traffic has proved the consultants wrong.
