Chipata Mayor Sinoya Mwale calls for re-introduction of bicycle levy

Chipata Mayor Sinoya Mwale has suggested that the collection of bicycle levy should be re-introduced to assist enhance revenue collection in the district.

Mr. Mwale says that re-introducing the levy will benefit Chipata District.

He explained that bicycle levy was introduced in Zambia, during late republican president Levy Mwanawasa’s reign adding that re-introducing it will be a good idea.

Mr. Mwale was speaking on Friday at a full council meeting in Chipata.

Meanwhile Kanjala ward councilor William Phiri argued with the idea saying the collection of the bicycle levy will not be fair to local people.

When asked after the meeting, Mr. Phiri told Breeze News that cyclists are poor people who are trying to earn a living and it will not be fair for the local council to collect levy from them.

Mr. Phiri said the council has many avenues to collect revenue from, and develop Chipata district other than collecting levy from cyclists.
