The Prisons Service says that congestion has continued in correction centres in Eastern Province.
And correction centres in Eastern Province this morning opened with a total number of 1,949 inmates.
Zambia Correctional Services Eastern Deputy Commander, Superintendent Njanvwani Nalungwe Kalenga said this when she delivered her jail delivery at the opening of the Chipata High court session.
Superintendent Kalenga says Chipata’s Namuseche Correctional Service had 1,005 inmates while Lundazi had 278 inmates.
Superintendent Kalenga says that Petauke opened with 250 inmates while Nyimba had 188 inmates.
She noted that congestion has continued in most correctional Services in the province due to population growth that has led to an increase in crime cases.

And High Court Judge, Justice Florence Lengalenga says she will look into the issue of congestion by ensuring that most cases that do not need long serving are given community service.
Some of the cases that Justice Florence Lengalenga is expended to handle during her sitting in Chipata include Aggravated Robbery, Defilement, Indecent Assault, Infanticide and Causing Death by Dangerous Driving.
