Congestion in prisons of Eastern Province has continued.

Congestion has continued in most Correction Service centres in Eastern Province.

And prisons in Eastern Province had by 06 hours this morning, a total number of two thousand and forty five inmates.

Presenting a jail delivery during the opening of the Chipata High Court this morning, Acting Regional Commanding Officer, Superintendent Alex Chibale said Chipata’s Namuseche correction service centre opened with the highest number of 960 inmates.

Superintendent Chibale says Lundazi correction service centre opened with 318 prisoners, Petauke 290, Katete 259 while Nyimba prison opened with 218 inmates.

And Superintendent Chibale says the correction service centres have continued facing challenges of lack of uniforms for inmates and transport.

He added that Namuseche Correction centre in Chipata has challenges in staffing levels with only 47 officers out of the required number of 160 officers.

Meanwhile, High Court Judge, Justice Getrude Chawatama says she will find time to visit Namuseche and Chadiza open air correction centre.

Among the cases that Justice Chawatama will handle in the Chipata High Court include, aggravated robbery, murder, defilement and trafficking in psychotropic substances.
