Council casual workers operating from markets in Chipata have downed tools because of not being paid their salaries for two months.
The workers are those operating from Nabvutika, Kapata, Saturday and M’chini markets.
But Chipata Municipal Council Public Relations Officer, Taonga Kaonga told Breeze News that the step taken by the casual workers to stop working is illegal because they have not engaged management on the matter.
Ms. Kaonga acknowledged that the council has not been paying its casual workers for two months because of low revenue being collected from the markets.
She however, says the local authority has already sourced for money to pay the casual workers.
Ms Kaonga says it is unfortunate that the workers have gone on strike because management has not refused to pay them their money.
