A day old baby has died after allegedly being dumped in a pit latrine by her mother in M’chini Compound of Chipata district.
Chief Fire Officer, Fackson Mbewe confirmed the incident to Breeze News.
Mr. Mbewe says the baby was discovered by neighbours after a bad scent of rotten flesh coming from a pit latrine.
Mr. Mbewe says a fire Brigade crew that rushed to the scene after receiving a call from the police found people had already retrieved the body.
He says the fire Brigade crew then picked up the body, which was swollen and in a bad state and handed it over to the police.
The Chief Fire officer added that a girl in her early twenties, accompanied the fire Brigade crew to the police after members of the community accused her of having dumped the baby the previous night.
He says the girl admitted to having given birth from the toilet because she did not know that she was in labour when she went to answer the call of nature and the baby dropped into the pit latrine.
