Development threatens to take over graveyard land

Residents of Mchenga area in Chipata have expressed disappointment that people have continued encroaching grave yards situated in Mchini and Lozi area.

Chairperson for Mchenga ECU Branch, Benson Phiri, says that people are busy constructing churches and houses right at the graveyards.

The visibly annoyed chairperson, explained that when approached, the people putting up the structures produce documents that bear council date stamps.

He appealed to Chipata Mayor, Sinoya Mwale and councilors to quickly address the matter.

And Chipata Mayor Sinoya Mwale, asked the affected residents to approach the council so that the matter can be investigated.

Mr. Mwale explained that while he is aware of the land challenges in the district, putting up structures such as churches and houses in graveyards is not good.

He said his office will ensure that the said documents from the council that the people putting up churches and houses have, are fully verified.
