Eastern Province Minister, Malozo Sichone and three others have escaped death after being involved in a road traffic accident which happened along airport road on Katopola Turnoff junction.
The incident occurred on Friday around 13:45 hours when the driver of his official vehicle, a Pajero registration number GRZ 131 CJ lost control and hit into a sign post as he tried to avoid knocking down a cyclist.
The Minister’s head messenger, Justine Mwale narrated from the accident scene that the Minister, his driver and himself escaped unhurt while the cyclist sustained injuries and was rushed to Chipata General Hospital.
The Minister was on his way to the airport from Chipata Town to see off Defense Minister Geoffrey Mwamba who was in the Province to open the 4th intake of the 2012 Chiwoko ZNS skills training programe.
And Eastern Province Permanent Secretary Emmanuel Mwamba who rushed to the scene told journalists that there is need to expand the roads and construct shoulders.
He says that this would reduce accidents involving cyclists which he says are on an increase in the province.
Mr. Mwamba also says that RTSA, the Road Transport and Safety Agency have to do a lot of sensitizations to cyclists who at the moment do not understand traffic rules.
