Farmers of Virginia tobacco in Eastern Province are stranded with their produce due to lack of market.
Zambia National Farmers Union ZNFU Regional Coordinator, Virgil Malambo has confirmed to Breeze News.
Mr Malambo explained that there is currently no company in the province which is buying Virginia tobacco.
He expressed concern that TBZ, Tobacco Board of Zambia did not prepare in advance for market of those farmers growing Virginia tobacco.
Mr Malambo says that although ZNFU appreciates the efforts being made by TBZ to find market, this should have been done before the market opened.
He says farmers are now desperate, especially that their colleagues who grew burley started selling their cash crop two weeks ago.
Last week TBZ indicated that every effort was being made to ensure that companies that buy Virginia tobacco come to the region.
