Proposals to have a dual carriageway on Umodzi Highway in Chipata have been abandoned.
Eastern Province Permanent Secretary Chanda Kasolo has confirmed to Breeze News.
Mr. Kasolo says that it is not possible to have a dual carriage way on Umodzi Highway because space is not enough to accommodate such a road.
Last month, Mr. Kasolo revealed that he was engaging funders of the Great East road work project to see a possibility of having a dual carriageway.
Mr. Kasolo however, says that government is now looking at a possibility of constructing ring roads to decongest traffic in town especially trucks.
He says that it is important for trucks to use ring roads or only be given access into town during specific hours so that roads are not congested.
