Government advised against going ahead with its plan to reform the public service pension’s scheme.

The United Party for National Development UPND has advised government against going ahead with its plan to reform the public service pension’s scheme.
Under the reform, workers will no longer receive a lump sum of their benefits upon retiring from employment but will instead be paid through monthly payments.
UPND Deputy Provincial Information Secretary, Steven Munene says the system will lead to civil servants languishing after retiring.
Mr. Munene says that salaries for civil servants are low such that they will end up even spending the monthly retirement payment.
He says that such a system can only work if civil servants were paid good salaries like some of those in the private sector.
Mr. Munene says that government should liaise with civil servants on the matter because UPND does not support the reform system.
Reacting to the concerns on the matter on Monday, Labour Minister Fackson Shamenda advised ZCTU, Zambia Congress of Trade Union to dialogue with government.
