Lundazi district show society chairperson John Zimba has called on government to quickly start buying maize from small scale farmers in the district.
Speaking during 53rd Lundazi District Agricultural and Commercial Show yesterday, Mr. Zimba noted that early opening of the market by FRA will help avoid the smuggling of the staple food to the neighbouring countries which has already started.
Mr. Zimba however, commended government for embarking on an early distribution of farming inputs for the 2015/2016 farming season stating that it shows commitment by government to improving the agriculture sector.
And Acting Lundazi District Commissioner, Mukule Banda says government will remain committed to uplifting the living standards of people in Lundazi through agriculture.
Mr. Banda indicated that government through FRA will continue to buy produce from small scale farmers in order to establish and maintain strategic food reserves.
He revealed that government through FRA has already started making preparations to start buying maize.
