Government has released about 62,500 by 50 kilogram bags of relief maize to be distributed to starving villagers in Eastern Province.
This is in addition to 450 metric tonnes of relief maize that was already distributed to vulnerable people in Eastern Province this year.
Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit DMMU Regional Manager, Ingribet Bondo confirmed during a Budget Tracking Programme on Breeze FM this morning.
Mr. Bondo explained that for the sake of transparency, the identification of areas which are food insecure and vulnerable households has been left to the district management committees and satellite disaster management committees.
And Mr. Bondo says that DMMU has stopped distributing relief maize in constituencies and wards that are holding by-elections.
He also dismissed statements that relief food is being used as a campaign tool, stating that no relief food is distributed without a hunger assessment being conducted.
Meanwhile Mr. Bondo says that DMMU has this year received about 120,000 Kwacha operational funds from the 2015 National Budget.
He explained most of the activities conducted by DMMU like distribution of relief maize are funded directly by the head office in Lusaka.
