Hypertension has been the second highest killer of pregnant women at Chipata General Hospital.
Hospital Obstetrician Gynecologist, Augustine Chyimana told Breeze News that the first condition that claims a number of pregnant women at the hospital is bleeding.
Dr. Chyimana however, says that despite the increasing number of expectant mothers with hypertension, the hospital has managed to control the condition by using magnesium sulphate especially in pregnant women who fit.
Dr. Chyimana explained that the hospital in the first quarter admitted 23 women with hypertension and another 23 in the second quarter while the third quarter saw a rise of 33 expectant hypertensive mothers being admitted.
He says that among the hypertensive expectant women, the hospital only recorded one death this year.
Dr. Chyimana urged expectant mothers to be checking their Blood Pressure regularly as hypertension may affect their liver, heart and kidneys if not treated.
And Dr. Chyimana says that molar pregnancies are also on the increase at the hospital.
Molar pregnancy is a condition where a pregnancy develops in an abnormal way and turns into cancer of the womb if not treated early.
He says that the hospital has this year recorded 13 molar pregnancies.
