A land dispute has ensued in Welela area of Chipata district with about 4 hectares of land belonging to Walela Basic School being encroached.
Walela Basic School PTA, Parents Teachers Association Chairperson, Abusalom Banda says that this has prevented the school from carrying out its plans of building more classrooms and teacher’s houses.
Mr. Banda alleged that some people from a nearby settlement called Kauchende have been illegally selling plots on school land.
And Musanga Zone Second Secretary, Josephine Mashowo says that efforts to have the named people stop selling land have failed.
She says that the group has been claiming to have authority from Chipata District Commissioner, Kalunga Zulu, Musanga Ward Councilor, Alick Banda and Chipata Municipal Council.
Ms. Mashowo explained that efforts to resolve the matter with the group failed as they walked out of the meeting held this morning, vowing not to stop their illegal activities.
And when contacted for comment, Chipata District Commissioner, Kalunga Zulu denied giving authority to the named people to sell land.
Mr. Zulu said that he was going to report the matter to police adding that he does not have any powers over land administration in the district.
