Journalists in Chipata have celebrated World Press Freedom Day.
The media practitioners from various media institutions this morning matched on Umodzi Highway to celebrate the day, which is being commemorated under the theme “Ensuring safety of journalists and media workers”.
And the Chipata Press Club Chairperson, Darlington Mwenadabai has appealed to government to give support to the media by ensuring that they are protected.
Speaking during the event, Mr. Mwendabai says that without the media the public will be starved of very important information and as such deserves to work in a conducive environment.
And the press club board Chairman, Raymond Banda says that the government should continue giving licences to media houses.
Mr. Banda also says that government should see to it that journalists have better salaries and transport so that they are not corrupted by selfish individuals.
Meanwhile Eastern Province Permanent Secretary Bert Mushala says the World Press Freedom Day is celebrated to defend the media from attacks on their independence.
Mr. M,ushala also says that the event is meant to pay tribute to more than 600 journalists and media workers who have lost their lives in the exercise of their profession.
The PS says that the government is alive to the fact that freedom of expression and that of the media is a cornerstone to the tenets of democracy.
