The opposition Movement for Multi-Party Democracy, MMD, in Eastern Province has expressed disappointment with the manner in which the motion on the removal of former President Rupiah Banda’s immunity was handled in Parliament.
MMD Provincial Secretary, Samuel Lugomo Phiri says that his party is wondering why the Justice Minister, Wynter Kabimba went ahead to table the motion when the matter had already been taken to court by the former President’s lawyers.
Mr. Phiri says that the matter has been handled prematurely adding that voting for the removal of Rupiah Banda’s immunity was a mockery.
And Mr. Phiri says that MMD Members Parliament from Eastern Province, who are currently serving as Deputy Ministers, will face disciplinary action for voting for the removal of the former President’s immunity.
The MMD demanded for the voice of traditional leaders in the province on the matter which concerns their subject.
Meanwhile the Centre for Human Rights in Eastern Province has welcomed the move by parliament to remove the immunity of former President, Rupiah Banda.
Centre for Human Rights Executive Officer, Mwima Mtine says that the move will allow the former head of state to clear himself before the courts of law on allegations levelled against him.
Mr. Mtine says that the move will also sound a warning to the incoming Presidents not abuse public resources.
Lifting of Rupiah Banda’s immunity annoys MMD in Eastern Province.
