Lundazi has become the major supplier of Red Onion from November to February every year in Lusaka and Democratic Republican of Congo.
This has attracted interest from Cross Border Network Africa to launch a project, which will target at improving production of Red Onion in Lundazi district.
Chairman General, Bernard Sikunyogana says that the network is targeting to empower 1,000 farmers with production knowledge and farming inputs, which will enable increased production.
Speaking when he paid a courtesy call on Chief Mwase Thembwe, Mr. Sikunyogana indicated that it was sad that Zambia was importing Red Onion when Lundazi district has the capacity to produce enough for the whole country and for export.
He disclosed that the Network has plans to build sheds that will have Onion Dryer Machines so that production is not affected during the rainy season.
And Chief Mwase Thembwe welcomed the launch of the project, stating that it would assist people make money and provide for their families.
The traditional leader noted that most of the young people in his chiefdom were inactive because they did not have anything to do.
Lundazi leads in supplying Red Onion to Lusaka and Democratic Republic of Congo.
