Malawi commends Zambian government for reducing poverty

The Malawian government has commended Zambia for the strides it has made in reducing poverty levels through the social cash transfer scheme.
Visiting Malawian Principal Secretary for Gender, Children, Disability and Social Welfare Esmie Kainja says Zambia is a role model in the Southern region in the way it is implementing the scheme.
Ms Kainja was speaking in Chipata, when she called on Eastern Province Assistant Secretary Beenzu Chikuba.
She disclosed that Malawi has a lot to learn from the way Zambia is implementing the programme aimed at improving the living standards of vulnerable people in society.
She explained that her government wants to learn from Zambia because it has plans to scale up the programme to all the districts in the country.
Ms. Kainja noted that the Malawian government decided to exchange notes on the successes and challenges of the programme because the two countries have a lot of things in common.
And Ms. Chikuba disclosed that government has recorded significant progress in the implementation of the social cash transfer which has changed many lives in the country.
She explained that a number of districts have been added to the programme which is used as a tool for reducing poverty at household level.
