Malawian businessmen mop up maize in Chipangali Constituency

Malawian briefcase businessmen have invaded Chipangali Constituency in Chipata buying maize in large quantities.
The traders are reported to be offering as high as 80 Kwacha for a 50 kilogramme bag of maize to entice farmers to sell all their produce.
The matter has however, worried the ruling PF, Patriotic Front Party in the constituency, which has called on government to quickly intervene before farmers sell all their produce.
Chipangali Constituency Chairperson, Suzyo Lungu says that chances of farmers facing hunger next year are very high since they are not keeping maize for home consumption.
Mr. Lungu told Breeze News that the party has visited a number of areas in the constituency like Chakoloma and Kamutengo where the traders were found busy buying maize.
He wondered whether Malawi would come to the aid of Zambians, once people in rural areas like Chipangali start starving.
Mr. Lungu says that the PF does not want a repeat of what happened in 2002 and 2003 where people in the constituency experienced severe hunger.
