Ministry of Education records 194 pregnancies in the first quarter of 2016.

The Ministry of Education in Eastern Province has recorded over one hundred and ninety pregnancies from January to March this year.

This came to light during the second ordinary PDCC Provincial Development Coordinating Committee meeting held in Chipata.

Provincial Senior Planner, Mang’ombe Tembo, said 194 girls fell pregnant during the first quarter of the year.

Mr. Tembo said out of the number of girls who fell pregnant, 105 were re-entered into school after they delivered.

He also noted that 13 boys and 21 girls respectively went into early marriages in the province.

Mr. Tembo said the department had a big challenge to address the issue of pregnancies and children going into early marriages.

He implored other stakeholders such as the departments of health and Community Development to partner with the Ministry of Education to address the problem.
