MMD warns suspended members against engaging in active party activities.

The Movement for Multi-Party Democracy MMD has cautioned suspended members against getting actively involved in party activities.

MMD Provincial Secretary, Samuel Lugomo Phiri says that the party leadership in the province has received information that suspended Kasenengwa Constituency Chairperson Gabriel Mbewe is holding party meetings.

Mr. Phiri says that Mr. Mbewe was suspended in January this year after he abused 3,000 Kwacha, which two MMD applicants for the Kasenengwa Constituency parliamentary by-election had paid.

But when contacted, Mr. Mbewe denied being suspended stating that he had not received any suspension letter from the party.

He also refuted the allegation that he abused party funds, saying that according to MMD guidelines, members of the constituency executive are supposed to share 50 per cent of the money paid by applicants.

Mr. Mbewe says that the executive shared 1,500 Kwacha and submitted the remaining 1,500 Kwacha to the MMD District Executive Committee.

He says that it is within his powers to hold party meetings in the constituency.
