Hospital Superintendent, Dr Daniel Makawa, confirmed to journalists on Wednesday, that the student nurses who were helping out with operations at the hospital had gone on holiday.
Dr Makawa, added that the cancer section had to be closed temporarily, to address the critical shortage of nurses at the hospital, which has been created by the firing of nurses.
He explained that the hospital has also had to scale down on certain services and are currently only attending to emergency cases.
Dr Makawa says that the hospital has had to make some adjustments in the wards as well, in order to help relieve the burden on the few nurses that have remained.
Dr Makawa, who commended the nurses for the efforts being put in, appealed to the public to understand that the hospital could not currently operate at full force, due to the shortages.
Forty nurses were fired in Eastern Province, following the recently held country wide illegal strike.
