Police in Chipata impound four trucks from Malawi carrying over 5,000 bags of maize and mealie-meal.

Police in Chipata have impounded four trucks from Malawi carrying over 5,000 bags of maize and mealie-meal belonging to a Zambian.
Deputy Police Commissioner, Alfred Nawa confirmed this to Breeze News saying that the trucks were impounded on Friday evening at Mwami border.
He says that three Mitsubishi registered trucks were carrying 1,500 by 50 kilogram bags of maize each while one Fuso truck was carrying 600 by 25 kilogram bags of mealie- meal.

Mr. Nawa says that the maize was genuinely bought from the FRA, Food Reserve Agency, in Chipata and Nyimba by a named company but the owner decided to sell the commodity to another company, which was now trying to smuggle the two products into Malawi.
He says that three Malawian drivers who were driving the trucks are in police custody and will be released soon, while one driver abandoned the vehicle and ran away.
Mr. Nawa says that the owner of the trucks, who is based in Blantyre, has been informed and will arrive in Zambia soon to help the police with investigations.
