Police in Katete District have apprehended a man believed to be a key suspect into the gruesome killing of a -19 year –old Katete Day Secondary School pupil last Saturday.
Eastern Province Police Commissioner Grace Chipalila and Deputy Police Commissioner Alfred Nawa have confirmed the arrest of Faindani Phiri 24, of Gudula Village.
The body of Naomi Daka of Mkoma Ni Mau Village in Chief Kawaza’s area was found in the bush near the school playing field.
This was after the teenager had gone to school to study around 19:00 hours with two other girls, who included her younger sister.
Mr Nawa says the suspect was apprehended in Sinda District after fleeing the mourners who had followed him at his house in Katete.
He says the suspect who has been charged with murder was trailing the girl every day.
Naomi who had signs of having been raped and strangulation was also stabbed in the face by sharp instruments suspected to be a knife.
Meanwhile one person has died after being hit by a Toyota Hilux Surf registration number ABZ 9205 on the Great East Road in Petauke District.
Mr Nawa says Aaron Tembo 35, of Zemba Village in Chief Mumbi died on the spot in a road traffic accident which happened West of Petauke boma on Tuesday.
He says the accident happened when a tourist Reiner Berthold 33, of Niedervassr, Germany avoided hitting a pig which was on the road.
Mr Nawa explained that Berthold has been charged with the case of causing death by dangerous driving and is expected to appear in court soon.
