Pregnancy cases among school going girls in Eastern Province have reduced

Provincial Education Officer, Allan Lingambe says that in December 2015 alone, the province recorded 692 pregnancies while 194 cases were recorded in March this year.

Dr. Lingambe says this is due to measures that government has put in place such as reducing the distance covered by most pupils when going to school by upgrading most schools to secondary level.

He says most female pupils were falling pregnant because they were forced to rent houses near schools, due to the long distance from their homes.

And Dr. Lingambe says government has enrolled about 2,790 pupils in grade ten in the upgraded secondary schools.

He says government has also constructed one by three classroom blocks in the 22 upgraded schools, adding that this has also reduced congestion in classrooms and improved the performance of pupils.
