Government has promised to protect journalists and radio stations from political violence.
Eastern Province Permanent Secretary, Chanda Kasolo has also vowed to deal sternly with political cadres who are in the habit of harassing the media.
Speaking during commemoration of World Radio Day in Chipata this morning, Mr Kasolo noted that security will deal with any manner of hooliganism in the province.
He apologised for the attacks on journalists and radio stations by political cadres and for not having resolved the matter quickly.
Mr. Kasolo says that any political party that does not agree with what is being broadcast by radio stations should use IBA, the Independent Broadcasting Authority to air their grievances than resorting to violence.
He stated that the media is very important because government cannot make decision with getting information being disseminated by the journalists.
And Mr Kasolo says that Eastern Province boosts of eight radio stations including one first ever privately owned television station.
He stated that the commemoration of World Radio Day would deepen public interest and investment in radio in Eastern Province for accelerated social and economic development.
Mr. Kasolo says that Eastern Province must in the next one year have a radio station in each district and hoped that IBA would assist to make this vision come into reality.
Mr. Kasolo appealed to the media in Eastern Province to market the endowed natural resources and unique attractions, which the region has to offer for increased job opportunities and wealth creation.
He stated that Eastern Province is endowed with rich resources in tourism and agriculture and traditional ceremonies while small scale farmers are very hard working.
