Calls on government to investigate reports of people being charged when obtaining NRC’s and registering as voters have continued.
This time, people of Mngomba and Mtandaza areas of Sinda Constituency have called for investigations to be extended to their areas.
Davy Phiri and Goliath Tembo also explained that some requirements such as letters from the chiefs especially in border areas are making the registration process for some people longer.
They explained that while it is important for the officers to ensure that only Zambians obtain NRCs and register as voters, it is easier to check for names of people in village books, than asking for letters from chiefs.
Last week, Eastern Province Permanent Secretary, Chanda Kasolo, described charging people to register as voters as fraud and advised all those, who are charged to demand receipts or report the matter to police.
The Electoral Commission of Zambia, ECZ has also been emphasizing that registering as a voter is free of charge.
However, the commission emphasized that screening will be done before people register following attempts by some foreign nationals to register as Zambian voters.
It also advised members of the public to be alert and report any malpractices during the registration of voters.
