Severe hunger has hit Kampini Ward in Chadiza District, forcing villagers to survive on mangoes.
Kampini Ward Councilor, Choke Banda told Breeze News in Chadiza that about 80 per cent of the people in the area have no food.
Mr. Banda stated that the aged and orphans are the most affected people adding that government needs to move in quickly to supply relief food.
Meanwhile about 372 metric tonnes of relief maize has been released to Chipata District to distribute to hunger stricken people.
Chipata District Commissioner, Kalunga Zulu says that the maize will be distributed to 9, 423 households in areas that experienced erratic rainfall in the 2014/2015 rain season, as most of their crops struggled to grow.
Mr. Zulu added that 100 metric tonnes has been set aside in case the demand increases.
He says that the distribution started yesterday in Chipangali Constituency.
