Some beneficiaries under the government Social Cash Transfer Scheme in Chipata have not received payment for six months.
Speaking to Breeze News, the affected beneficiaries say that the Department of Social Welfare has not given reasonable explanation as to why they are not being paid.
Robert Phiri says that before the August 11 general elections, government assured the beneficiaries that it had enough money to pay them.
When contacted for comment, Provincial Social Welfare Officer, Mulemba Kaleyi referred the matter to Eastern Province Permanent Secretary, Chanda Kasolo.
And Mr. Kasolo says that it is not automatic that beneficiaries of the scheme will receive payment every month.
He explained that the scheme involves a continuous assessment exercise, where only the most vulnerable people continue to receive payment.
The permanent secretary, however, advised those who are not being paid to take up the matter with the district commissioner’s office.
