Some council workers in Chipata stage strike over non-payment of four months salaries.

Some Chipata Municipal Council workers at Saturday market have downed tools due of non-payment of salaries for four months.

Saturday Market Treasurer, Rayford Ngoma, confirmed to Breeze News that the workers have stopped cleaning the market premises.

Mr. Ngoma says that only workers that have continued working from the market are the ones that are collecting revenue and the ones that sale tickets for the toilets.

He wondered why the council has continued to collect revenue from the traders when they are not cleaning the market premises.

And when contacted for a comment, Chipata Municipal Council Town Clerk, Namenda Kaonga acknowledged the delay in paying the workers.

Mr. Namenda says the local authority has delayed because the workers are not collecting enough revenue from the market to pay their salaries.

Mr. Kaonga says that the workers will be paid half of the undisclosed amount owed to them, on Monday together with the casual workers, who have not yet received their February salary.

He explained that the council has borrowed a top up of 9, 000 Kwacha from the main account so that the workers can be paid.
