Suspected rabies kills two people in Lundazi district

Suspected rabies has broken out in Chiefs Kazembe and Mwasemphangwe areas in Lundazi district killing two people.
ZANIS in Lundazi report that Lundazi District Community Medical Officer, Allan Chisenga disclosed this during Lundazi District Epidemic Preparedness, Prevention, Control and Management meeting held yesterday.
Dr. Chisenga identified the two people as Fenally Nguni aged 52 of Chungu village and Isaac Phiri aged 13 of Kabilolo village in Chief Kazembe.
He explained that Fenally Nguni died on Monday this week while Isaac Phiri died on 30th June, 2015 after being beaten by suspected rabid dogs.
Dr. Chisenga further disclosed that 34 people from various villages such as Jelema, Mandola, Luka, Kabilolo and Chungu in Chief Kazembe and 10 people from Mwasemphangwe have been affected after been bitten by rabid dogs.
And Lundazi District Commissioner, Mukule Banda has formed a Task Force Committee comprising officers from Ministry of Health, Council, Veterinary Department, Zambia Wildlife Authority, Police and the Department of Chiefs Affairs to kill all stray dogs in order to eradicate rabies in the two chiefdoms.
