Traffic police officers in Chipata warned against being corrupt

Home Affairs deputy minister Panji Kaunda has warned erring traffic police officers of stiffer punishment
Colonel Kaunda sounded the warning when he paid a courtesy call at the provincial permanent secretary Chanda Kasolo this morning.
Colonel Kaunda said it was saddening to note that some traffic police officers were corrupt.
He revealed that traffic police officers mounting a road block at Lutembwe Bridge along the Mwami border road were allowing not road worthy vehicles to pass through as he watched by the side.
Colonel Kaunda said earlier in the year he had given a directive to traffic police not to allow taxi operators to conduct their business if their cars do not have recognised ribbon and other normal taxi requirements for Eastern Province.
He said this has not been implemented adding the need to get rid of erring officers.
The minister said from now on any traffic officer found mounting a road block in town roads will be committing an offence.
He said after an overhaul of the traffic section at Chipata Central Police Station, any taxi operator found wanting will be taken to court to defend him or herself whether guilty or not guilty.
And Provincial Permanent Secretary Chanda Kasolo acknowledged the ministry’s move as positive adding that it will improve public perception about traffic police officers.
He commended RTSA, Road Transport and Safety Agency as one which is doing well in her operations.
