The Young African Leaders Initiative YALI says it is deeply concerned that no hearing has so far taken place in the presidential petition.
This is in a matter in which UPND candidate, Hakainde Hichilema and his running mate, Geoffrey Bwalya Mwamba, petitioned the declaration of president elect Edgar Lungu in the Constitutional Court.
Governance Advisor, Isaac Mwanza says that as much as YALI is alive to the fact that the respondents have raised serious preliminary issues which must be determined before the petition can be heard, it however, does not know how many more preliminary issues may be raised in the coming days.
Mr. Mwanza says YALI is concerned that until now the Court has not even began to hear the substantive matter.
He says that this situation has created a lot of anxiety among businesses and citizens supporting both the ruling and opposition parties.
Mr. Mwanza says that YALI is of the view that the inauguration of the President-elect elect be allowed to proceed after the expiry of the 14-day period imposed by the Constitution for commencement of the hearing, if there is no hearing at all.
The YALI governance advisor says the 21 days waiting period is already proving too much to bear among Zambians.
The petition was filed in the Constitutional Court on Friday, 19 August, 2016.
