YALI happy with ECZ strong stance against political violence

The Young African Leaders Initiative YALI has welcomed the warning by ECZ, the Electoral Commission of Zambia to disqualify candidates who encourage or fane violence.

And YALI Governance Advisor, Isaac Mwanza has called on the ECZ to exercise the powers granted to it by the Electoral Process Act to disqualify candidates.

Mr. Mwanza says that there is increased breach of the electoral code and escalating violence which include the removal of posters and destruction of billboards for both the PF and UPND across the country.

He has reminded political parties that article 60 of the amended Constitution requires of them to stop their members from intimidating or encouraging violence against opponents.

Mr. Mwanza has noted that any failure to comply with this provision has dire consequence to the continued existence of political parties.

He says that section 18 of the Constitution Amendment Act No. 1, states that political parties breaking the law shall cease to exist.
