Zambian contractors culprits in flouting labour laws

Government says most Zambian contractors in Eastern Province are culprits in flouting labour laws.
Sinda District Labour Officer, Reuben Banda says most construction companies that are Zambian owned have challenges of paying their workers.
Mr. Banda told a Breeze Budget Tracking Team that so far, the district labour office has referred 5 labor cases to court and all of them involve Zambian owned companies.
Mr. Banda wondered why this is the case when these contractors declare that they have capacity to do the works when bidding for contracts.
Mr Banda has warned that his office will not tolerate any contractor who is flouting the labour laws.
Meanwhile, the labor office in Sinda has managed to handle and settle 108 labor related cases from January to September this year compared to 104 labor related cases in 2014.
Mr. Banda says that so far, the department has helped employees to recover 46,676 Kwacha from their employers for the period January to September.
